M\u00ealant l&rsquo;innovation \u00e0 la haute-technologie, le design du Berkut ne laissait personne indiff\u00e9rent. Les ailes invers\u00e9es repr\u00e9sentaient l&rsquo;ultime \u00e9volution des travaux initi\u00e9s par les bureaux d\u2019\u00e9tudes Allemands, durant la seconde guerre mondiale.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/372\/31486109224_4fc6c294c3_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nJunkers Ju 287 (source : prototype.free.fr)<\/p>\n<p>A l&rsquo;issue du conflit, les travaux furent poursuivis secr\u00e8tement par les avionneurs Russes. Le prototype OKB-1 EF 140 fut la premi\u00e8re concr\u00e9tisation de ces recherches.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/672\/32208531821_113436c4d2_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<img src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/341\/31952130680_e61c59e60e_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nEF 140 (source : prototype.free.fr)<\/p>\n<p>Le g\u00e9nie de Sukhoi fut d&rsquo;adjoindre des stabilisateurs horizontaux, en amont des ailes. Egalement appel\u00e9s \u00ab\u00a0plans canard\u00a0\u00bb, ces stabilisateurs rendaient le S-37 naturellement hautement man\u0153uvrable. L&rsquo;instabilit\u00e9 naturelle du prototype \u00e9tait contr\u00f4l\u00e9e en permanence par un Calculateur Automatique De Stabilit\u00e9 ou CADS.<\/p>\n<p>En 1973, le concept m\u00eame d&rsquo;avion instable \u00e9tait consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme r\u00e9volutionnaire. Jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 l&rsquo;av\u00e8nement de S-37 Berkut, aucun avion de combat n&rsquo;avait impl\u00e9ment\u00e9 un dispositif comparable au Calculateur Automatique De Stabilit\u00e9. Ce faisant, le CADS \u00e9tait le centre n\u00e9vralgique du prototype du bureau Sukhoi. Il se r\u00e9v\u00e9lera \u00e9galement \u00eatre son principal point faible.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/765\/31486109514_ec1f9cd8a5_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nEtude a\u00e9rodynamique du S-37 Berkut (source Midland Publishing)<\/p>\n<p><strong>DES ESSAIS DECEVANTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le premier vol eu lieu le 13 d\u00e9cembre 1973. Afin de pr\u00e9server le secret absolu qui entourait le projet, le prototype n\u00b0 1 fut enti\u00e8rement peins en noir. Ainsi, les d\u00e9tails a\u00e9rodynamiques et les supports d&rsquo;armement devinrent difficilement discernables.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/644\/31486109934_fbdea76670_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nLe prototype n\u00b0 1 lors des essais de roulage (source : Midland publishing)<\/p>\n<p>Les officiels vinrent par dizaines pour assister l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement. L&rsquo;enthousiasme et la curiosit\u00e9 firent rapidement place \u00e0 la d\u00e9ception. D\u00e8s les premiers tours de roue, le Calculateur Automatique De Stabilit\u00e9 cessa de fonctionner. Contraint par cet incident, le responsable des essais ajourna le vol. Le prototype n\u00b0 1 se contenta donc d&rsquo;un remorquage peu glorieux entre la piste d&rsquo;envol et son hangar.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/692\/32328216035_517c53ee70_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nLe prototype n\u00b0 1 apr\u00e8s le vol avort\u00e9\u00a0(source : Midland publishing)<\/p>\n<p>Le destin du second prototype fut nettement plus dramatique. Malgr\u00e9 un d\u00e9collage impressionnant, l&rsquo;appareil ne tint l&rsquo;air qu&rsquo;une quarantaine de minutes. Une fois encore ,le CADS d\u00e9montra un manque de fiabilit\u00e9 \u00e9vident. Alors que le pilote tentait un atterrissage d&rsquo;urgence, le S-37 fit une violente embard\u00e9e puis sortit de la piste. Bien que gri\u00e8vement bless\u00e9, le pilote \u00e9chappa miraculeusement \u00e0 un destin plus funeste.<\/p>\n<p>Pour des raisons de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 \u00e9videntes, le troisi\u00e8me et dernier prototype ne prit jamais l&rsquo;air. Il servit toutefois pour des tests moteurs et de r\u00e9sistance de structure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LA FIN DU PROJET S-37 BERKUT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;enqu\u00eate confirma la d\u00e9faillance du Calculateur Automatique De Stabilit\u00e9. Ce nouvel incident marqua la fin du projet d&rsquo;avion de combat hautement instable. Certes, le concept d&rsquo;instabilit\u00e9 ma\u00eetris\u00e9e \u00e9tait une voie d&rsquo;avenir. Toutefois, la technologie disponible au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 70 ne permettait pas d&rsquo;envisager son usage sur un avion de combat. Du moins, pas encore&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Les prototypes survivant furent stock\u00e9s durant 30 ann\u00e9es dans des locaux s\u00e9curis\u00e9s. Ce n&rsquo;est qu&rsquo;\u00e0 l&rsquo;aube des ann\u00e9es 2000 que le projet Berkut fut d\u00e9classifi\u00e9.
