Pour le constructeur am\u00e9ricain, il s&rsquo;agissait du premier client de\u00a0cet appareil qui n&rsquo;avait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 retenu par l&rsquo;US Navy.<\/p>\n<p>Cette mise en service repr\u00e9sentait \u00e9galement une premi\u00e8re mondiale. En effet, aucune marine n&rsquo;\u00e9tait alors\u00a0\u00e9quip\u00e9e d&rsquo;un Avion \u00e0 D\u00e9collage et Atterrissage Court (ADAC). De part sa conception, le Manta \u00e9tait capable d&rsquo;atterrir en moins de quinze m\u00e8tres, et ce, sans n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 imp\u00e9rieuse d&rsquo;utiliser le brin d&rsquo;arr\u00eat int\u00e9gr\u00e9. \u00a0Po\u00e9tiquement baptis\u00e9e par Vought \u00ab\u00a0a<em>tterrissage en feuille morte<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb cette technique permettait une approche finale et un atterrissage \u00e0 tr\u00e8s basse vitesse. Revers de la m\u00e9daille, elle demandait une ma\u00eetrise parfaite du pilotage de l&rsquo;appareil.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 les discours rassurants des instructeurs am\u00e9ricains, les pilotes de l&rsquo;a\u00e9ronavale accueillir avec le plus grand scepticisme ce nouveau concept. Les r\u00e9sultats plus que m\u00e9diocres des vols sur\u00a0simulateur ne firent que renforcer ce climat de d\u00e9fiance.<\/p>\n<p>Par un hasard malencontreux, \u00a0la chanson \u00ab\u00a0Les feuilles mortes\u00a0\u00bb d&rsquo;Yves MONTANT, connaissait alors un grand succ\u00e8s \u00e0 la radio. Malicieusement, les m\u00e9caniciens prirent plaisir \u00e0 fredonner \u00ab\u00a0Les feuilles mortes se ramassent \u00e0 la pelle&#8230;\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0alors qu&rsquo;ils croisaient les pilotes en formation. Il va sans dire que la plaisanterie\u00a0ne fut gu\u00e8re appr\u00e9ci\u00e9e par ces derniers.<\/p>\n<p>Contre toute attente, les premiers vols libre r\u00e9ussirent \u00e0 d\u00e9tendre l&rsquo;ambiance. C&rsquo;est avec un soulagement visible que les pilotes d\u00e9couvrirent un avion plut\u00f4t\u00a0docile, sans commune mesure avec l&rsquo;impitoyable\u00a0simulateur. La confiance \u00e9tablie, la formation se termina sans incident notable.<\/p>\n<p>Le F5-U resta au service actif dix ann\u00e9es durant\u00a0lesquelles il accomplit honn\u00eatement sa mission de chasseur-bombardier. Le Manta marqua\u00a0les\u00a0m\u00e9moires\u00a0le jour o\u00f9 un appareil atterri puis red\u00e9colla de l&rsquo;avenue des Champs Elys\u00e9es,\u00a0\u00e0 l&rsquo;occasion du d\u00e9fil\u00e9 du 14 juillet.
